The unobstructed vertical distance through the free atmosphere between the lowest opening from any type, plumbing fixture, appliance or appurtenance conveying waste to the flood level rim of the receptor. Basically it is the point of separation of potable and non-potable piping. This protects from back-siphon age from being crossed connected in anyway.

A water handling system set up with a direct drain connection to a sewage system has a chance of contaminating the potable water system. This would be deemed as a cross connection, It can happen when a sewer backs up, or when there is a loss of pressure in the system. The back up will travel back into the system and cause serious issues. Hence the need for the air-gap separation.
